Julie from our Glenwood Springs, Colorado office updates us on this Iconic Aspen rite of passage:
This is not for the faint of heart or the timid black
diamond skier.
With names like Ozone, Steep ‘n’ Deep and Mosh Pit, you
better be ready!
First, you “get” to hike the bowl which takes about 45
minutes and you don’t even stat hiking until 11,675 feet. The top is
12,392 and you will know it!!
Before trying the climb with your skis
on your shoulder, I highly recommend the “ski backpack” for carrying your
skis so you can use your poles for hiking and balance. With drop-offs on
either side, you will be happy you have those poles!
Wait…..it is worth it!! The views from the top are
second to none with Pyramid Peak and the Maroon Bells staring back at
you. For your relaxation, they have mounted a ski lift chair for your
viewing pleasure. {Personally, I think they are teasing you since there
is no chairlift to bring you up there!)
Maybe, it is just to help you get your nerve
up to ski “the bowl.”
Carve, Carve, Carve,
Fast , Fast, Fast!
Nothing puts a
smile on my face more than a clean run down the center on Ozone.
It is
not a good idea to fall though as won’t stop until the bottom and that would be
a huge bummer to leave your ski at the top!
The Bowl is open typically from January to the end of March
and it is best run in the middle of the day and on clear days to see the view
and to see the bottom!
If you would like to ski or snowboard Highlands Bowl, Julie is one of our "resident experts" for the Aspen/Snowmass area (it is her backyard) and she will be happy to assist you plan that perfect winter vacation.
